Why Is the Amazon Rainforest Known as the Lungs of the Earth?

The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth,” a phrase that blends scientific truth with powerful metaphor. As the largest tropical forest on the planet, it plays a critical role in global climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and the water cycle. Spanning over seven million square kilometers, it stretches beyond national borders and influences weather patterns across entire continents.

One reason for this nickname lies in the forest’s ability to produce oxygen through photosynthesis. During daylight hours, trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, renewing the air we breathe. Although much of this oxygen is reabsorbed at night during plant respiration, the Amazon still functions as a vital regulator of atmospheric gases.

The rainforest also stores an enormous amount of carbon in its vegetation and soil. If released, this carbon would intensify the greenhouse effect and accelerate global warming. That’s why conserving the Amazon is key to slowing down climate change. The region also regulates humidity and wind currents that affect rainfall as far away as southern Brazil and neighboring countries.

Another essential factor is the forest’s water cycle. Through transpiration, Amazonian trees release water vapor into the atmosphere, forming clouds and generating rain. These so-called “flying rivers” sustain complex hydrological systems that extend far beyond the forest’s physical boundaries.

Visiting the Amazon is more than witnessing a lush destination. It means standing before a living ecosystem that breathes, pulses, and sustains life in ways that are not immediately visible. Aboard the Untamed Amazon cruise, it’s possible to experience this connection up close. The rainforest is not just a backdrop — it is a living presence, a responsibility we all share.
