Mapati — also known as Amazonian grape, embaúba, cucura, uva-da-mata, or purumã — is the fruit of a medium-sized Amazonian tree, prized for its high nutritional value and pleasant flavor. Although it resembles grape clusters in appearance, this fruit has unique characteristics that make it an excellent option for eating in natura.
The fruit grows on the mapatizeiro tree, which can reach up to 12 meters in height. It propagates easily through seeds and thrives even in acidic, low-fertility soils. Beyond its fruit, the sap extracted from the tree is used in traditional medicine, particularly for treating eye ailments.
With the appearance of large grapes, the clustered fruits are rich in carbohydrates, fiber, and essential minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. While commonly eaten fresh, mapati can also be used in the preparation of sweets, preserved or dehydrated fruits, jams, juices, fermented beverages, granolas, and nutrient-rich flours.
